"I wrote this story reflecting on the month I spent in Freiburg learning at the Goethe language institute. Javier is a real friend of mine and though I have not spoken to him in some months, our shared memories learning German motivated much of my reflection. Little Heidi is also real, although I have no relation and never met her. Heidi Putscher was interviewed for a German broadcast to talk about the bombing. I used her story as a touchstone. I would not want the reader to think humorous moments in the piece make light of the subject matter; quite the opposite, I found myself unable to directly confront Germany's wrenching history of war, genocide, and cultural crisis.
